STS Students,
I wanted to remind you of the new tuition policies that had been published in the latest Catalog. It provides a break for those who take 9 or more hours. The details can be found on p. 62 of the 2009-2011 Catalog, which was published near the end of last semester. Let me know if you have questions regarding this policy.
Blessings,

To all Shepherds Degree Students:
Call for Tuition Grant Applications
Please consider applying for the Shepherds Tuition Grant-in-Aid program. The attached form is self-explanatory, but if you have questions, please contact Jo-Ellen Platt at 573-1555 (jplatt@shepherdsseminary.org) or Sam Winchester at 573-1552 (swinchester@nc.rr.com). Feel free to have the application expand beyond the single page attached. This application covers courses taken from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.
We would like to have all applications completed and returned by August 15. The Scholarship Committee will respond to applicants by early September.
Funds for the Tuition Grant come from private donors and thus are limited. However every effort will be made to respond to those in greatest need.
Title IV Financial Aid Programs
Mrs. Lucy Burggraff will begin work in Fall 2009 to develop the capability for Shepherds students to participate in Title IV Federal Financial Aid Programs and we expect to begin supporting applications in 2010. Mrs. Burggraff has managed these programs at other schools and seminaries. Title IV Financial Aid Programs include Federal Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Federal Work-Study (FWS), and Federal Stafford Loans. We urge those students that might be interested in these programs to begin preparations by using the extensive web network to educate themselves on eligibility requirements and payment plans.
We look forward to another challenging year with you at the Seminary,
Sam Winchester, Ph.D.
Chair, Faculty Scholarship Committee

Shepherds Theological Seminary is proud to announce the arrival of Dr. Doug Bookman. Dr. Bookman will be serving as Professor of New Testament Exposition and Director of Student Recruitment beginning this fall.
Dr. Bookman has a combined 40 years of experience as a seminary professor, pastor, and conference speaker. He describes his ministry passion on his website, www.bookmanministries.com:
I have given most of my professional life to teaching on the post-secondary level in Christian institutions. Over those years I developed a focus which has become exceedingly precious to me: the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God has impressed upon me and my family the wisdom of spending whatever years I have left doing what I do best and – of those endeavors to which I might give myself – that which most deserves to be done. I am persuaded that that would be to focus on teaching and preaching and writing on the life of Christ. To be sure, there are other areas of biblical and theological instruction which I feel qualified to address, and which I will address as the opportunity arises. But the person and work of Christ is the area of study to which I have given myself most carefully, and about which I am convinced I have some things to say that deserve to be said and that no one else is saying.
We are looking forward to the Christ-centered presence Dr. Bookman will bring to the campus.

Dear Students and Friends,
I wanted to remind you that the last event of Shepherds Theological Seminary for this school year will be our Commencement Service. It will be held on Sunday evening, May 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Colonial Baptist Church. Dr. John Hannah, Distinguished Professor of Historical Theology at Dallas Seminary will be the speaker of the evening. Following the service there will be a reception in the Café.
Let me just encourage our students – even though you are required to attend – please come with a joyful spirit to honor our graduates.
I know that this event is on Mother’s Day, but as I mentioned last year, the other universities in our area are holding their graduation services on this day, as well as many other theological seminaries across America. Next year, we will begin to hold our services on Friday evenings, so we will avoid this issue. Many of you know how difficult it is to earn a theological degree. Our graduates deserve our attendance to honor them for a job well-done. We’d love to have you bring friends and family as well. For your convenience, child care will be provided for children under age 5.
To assist us with our planning please RSVP to June Volstad at 573-1554, or e-mail her at jvolstad@shepherdsseminary.org, no later than Monday, May 4, 2009. An accurate count will help us know what we will need to make your experience more enjoyable.
Best wishes to you as you finish out the semester.
Cordially,
Larry Pettegrew, Th. D.
Dean

Hi Everyone,
We’ve had a great inaugural year of our Student Council, and it’s time to nominate and elect our Student Council for next year. Our procedure is three steps:
1. Receive nominations from the student body.
2. I will check with the person nominated to see if he would like to serve.
3. Have an election from the nominations.
We would like those nominated to have already completed at least 15 credit hours at Shepherds, and be making serious progress toward their degree. Or to say it another way, it would be better if the nominated students were enrolled in more than one course a semester.
This year we have had three students on the Student Council, and this has worked well. (Including me, this makes for a nice table of four at our early morning breakfast meetings at Bob Evans.) After the election, the student council themselves will decide on who will be president, vice-president, and secretary. There is a small scholarship of $300 per semester for each member of the Student Council.
Please send me your nominations at lpettegrew@shepherdsseminary.org in the next week by Monday, April 20, and we’ll have the elections shortly after that.
Thanks!
Larry Pettegrew
